Picturing 2020-2021: a year of opportunities for school

This year the reopening of schools is a particularly significant moment. In addition to usual expectations and challenges, schools need to ensure children’s and young people’s safety in a still uncertain situation. In this context, it is even more crucial to encourage all young citizens, to start the school year with courage and confidence.
The health emergency endowed Italy with greater awareness about the central role of education. Now more thar ever we need to ensure more ambitious investments to train and educate younger generations.
We as Junior Achievement believe that our mission is even more important this year. Together with our impact community – companies, institutions and associations – we will work to support schools and communities to start their educational activities with our learning by doing approach.

For 18 years, JA worked to innovate education systems with unconventional teaching methods and guided schools and its stakeholders towards the future of education.

We supported schools even during the most critical phases of the health emergency by offering over 60,000 students quality distance learning programs. Our students and teachers could count on 1,400 business volunteers from companies and institutions that support our project this year with even a stronger commitment to make an impact the education of our society.

With our Transversal Competences Manifesto, together with our supporters who signed it, we want to continue reiterating the importance of experiential learning and continuous collaboration with the world of work for all levels of education: with hard skills we learn how to do things, with soft skills, we know how to do differently and better! Among these, we consider essential the core skills of the entrepreneurial culture: financial education, creativity, social relationship skills.

The health emergency has highlighted more clearly all the weaknesses of the Italian school system: structural weaknesses, scarcity of technological investments to manage schools but also the modest digital literacy of teachers and students alongside with their families. This situation made the implementation of the distance learning methods difficult and excluded too many students from accessing education during lockdown.

At the same time, the emergency offered us many positive models from other European countries, to guide us in the ambitious goal of innovating the school system. We at JA are working on an important appointment in the coming months: we will host in Italy the association’s global board. We believe this occasion will enable us to involve international partners in contributing to the debate about the future of education of our country.

The experience we gained in the lockdown period should not be lost. We need to change the model towards a hybrid approach, balancing between presence and distance learning. We need to learn to apply experiential and innovative methodologies while resolving critical issues to be able to have an increasingly agile, open and inclusive school.

After focusing on reopening schools, the education system should concentrate on integrating knowledge and skills-based learning.
